Totoka Hair Designers host hostel house mothers
The APTC training salon, Totoka Hair Designers, recently hosted an afternoon of cuts and styles for women from the Deaf community, working as house mothers at the four hostels maintained by the Gospel School for the Deaf. The six women are responsible for 60 Deaf children from islands and rural areas boarding at the hostels.
Communicating through a sign language interpreter, the six house mothers expressed their delight at the chance to have some pampering at the hands of the APTC students.
"I heard about the house mothers through a friend of mine, and saw an opportunity for the students to make a contribution to the community, while practicing some of their skills," explained APTC Hairdressing Trainer, Kylie Kersel.
"These students have experience as hairdressers, and will return to their previous places of employment when they complete Certificate III in Hairdressing," continued Kylie. "It is important to emphasise that we are a training salon, and not in competition with local business. We are here to return skilled and certificated hairdressers back to their employers at the end of the course."
