Trainer sees the bigger picture
“ Every now and then something happens so that we Trainers see the bigger picture,” said Carpentry Trainer, Adrian Smith. “This was the case for me in Labasa recently, when Isikeli Dau, a Certificate III Carpentry students did some upskilling in measurement and calculations. After several days and many calculations later we reached a successful outcome. That in itself was a great feeling,” enthused Adrian.
“What I didn’t expect was the result when Isikeli finished for the day and went home to his family,” continued Adrian. “ IsIkeli had been given some additional calculations to work with at home. His son watched him doing these, and one afternoon, asked his Dad to help him with his homework.
“The next time I saw Isikeli, he said that the training in calculations had made it possible for him, for the first time, to work with and help his son with his calculation homework.
“As Trainers, we can often feel that we carry out our training and assessment in isolation, only dealing with the students and not seeing any other outcomes resulting from that training. It would appear that our work as Trainers might have a wider impact,” concluded Adrian.
