Trainer rewarded by PNG experience
“I have found the training in PNG some of the most challenging, yet the most highly rewarding, experiences of my career,” said Max Broad, Diesel Fitter Trainer.
Mr Broad was referring to his past two years as an APTC Trainer, based at the Ok Tedi Mines Ltd (OTML) in Tabubil, PNG.
“The adjustments I had to make, living in a different culture, were a challenge. However, my students are all tradespeople, and have great deal of experience to build on. This has made my job that much more rewarding,” explained Max.
“There is a training centre at OTML that I use for classroom and workshop instruction. There is a huge advantage for the students to my being based here. I use a flexible training model. This allows the students to access gap training between scheduled shift work, and I can conduct on-site competencies within the OTML workplace,” concluded Max.
Twenty-six OTML-based students have already graduated in Certificate III Diesel Fitting, and Max says he expects 70 more to graduate by the end of 2010.
