Disability no barrier to student’s success
Fitting and Machining student, Narere Kunei from Kiribati did not allow his childhood encounter with polio to be a barrier to his success.
Although Narere contracted polio some time between his first and second birthdays, which left him with one leg impaired, he set his sights on developing a career.
And today, Narere is a Mechanical Engineering graduate of the Tarawa Technical Institute, Kiribati, working as a mechanical engineer for the Kiribati Government’s Plant and Vehicle Unit.
Married, with two young children, Narere said, “I applied to APTC so that I could provide for my family. I am trying to do my best for them.
”
Narere has attended training at the Samoa campus and has undertaken assessment and training at his work place in Kiribati.
His APTC Trainer, Leigh Rollo said that Narere should complete his Certificate III course within the next six months. “When he does, he will be Kiribati’s first APTC graduate in Fitting and Machining,” said Leigh.
“Narere is a wonderful role model, an outstanding practitioner of his trade who excels in both theory and practical,” concluded Leigh.
