APTC School of Health and Community Services assessment day in Honiara for Children’s Services program
A group of enthusiastic Children’s Services applicants spent a half day participating in an skills assessment session in Honiara on Monday 7 September for entry into the Certificate III in Children’s Services course. This was the first time the school conducted an assessment session in the Solomon Islands and the participants travelled from a number of locations around the country to complete the application process. The morning began with the literacy, language and numeracy assessment and then applicants were allocated into groups and participated in a skills and knowledge assessment through interactive interview. The experience of the participants varied from working in primary schools to kindergartens in both public and private sector organisations with some people having worked for more than five years as early childhood educators and some having joined the early childhood sector in more recent. A number of applicants had completed an early childhood training program with the Honiara City Council and are looking to increase their skills and knowledge with an APTC qualification. In the interviews applicants were asked to talk about their day at work and the duties they perform with the children, how they involve parents and family in centres’ activities and how they meet the learning and development needs of small children. The breadth of knowledge and expertise in early childhood was impressive with participants talking about leading groups of 20 more children in one class. Other topics discussed included maintaining a safe and secure environment for children and creating appropriate learning activities to meet the varying development needs of children.
