STH Samoa students showcase skills for Dignitaries
Hospitality Operations and Cookery students from the APTC Samoa campus welcomed the Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Stephen Smith at a cocktail party hosted by the Australian High Commission. The occasion marked the end of Mr Smith’s busy schedule in Samoa, and was also attended by Samoa’s Prime Minister, Tuilaepa Sa’ilele Malielegaoi, as well as guests from Apia.
In the marquee on the lawn, Chef Trainers Steve Johnston and John Blake oversaw the cookery students serving 12 varieties of dishes, one of the students’ assignments being to cook for serving to the public. Hospitality Trainer, Dianne Whelan, had her students operating the bar, serving canapés and keeping the front of house professionally respectable.
Catering for one hundred and fifty guests the two classes served locally inspired dishes such as Honey & Chilli Glazed Snapper, Beetroot, Orange & Ginger shooters and Seared Sesame Tuna with Nahm Jim sauce.
A number of positive comments were received on the night, followed by guests from the Samoan Observer reporting (7th June), “The APTC is delivering world class vocational education and training to Pacific Island students...”
The impressive grounds and home of the famous author Robert Louis Stephenson made a fitting backdrop to the cultural dancing and fire knife displays that were a part of the evening’s entertainment.
