APTC automotive students make it safer to cross the road
Group One New Entrant Automotive students in PNG decided to lend a helping hand to the community by painting a pedestrian crossing outside the main entrance of the Hagara Primary School, which is a kilometre away from the APTC campus.
The APTC students were concerned for the safety of the 3000 students attending the school, as the main entrance is between a blind corner and a steep descent, on a busy highway that serves nearby villages as well as local industries.
In a cooperative undertaking, APTC provided the eight cans of line marking spray packs, the Port Moresby City Council (NCD Commission Operations Headquarters) provided the traffic safety cones for the painting sessions, and the Port Moresby Police Headquarters gave their approval
The crossing was completed in two sessions with the road narrowed to single lane traffic for the painting period.
“Hence the students completed an unofficial, on the job, competency in traffic management throughout the sessions,” said APTC Automotive Light Vehicle Trainer, Greg Robertson.
Greg said that fluorescent school crossing signs and banners are being sourced, via a donation from Ron King at Wilenco on the Sunshine Coast, as additional safety measures.
Greg added that students attending Hagara Primary School should be able to walk to school in safety knowing that APTC is not just a College for learning and skills development but is also a genuine, giving partner in the day to day necessities of Papua New Guinea people.
