Solomons’ only male hairdresser overcomes prejudice
Benjamin Karegua, the Solomon Islands’ first and only male hairdresser starting learning his trade in his aunt’s salon eleven years ago but is “significantly” expanding his skills at the School of Tourism and Hospitality (STH) Certificate III Hairdressing course at Nabua, Fiji.
“There is a lot of prejudice in the Solomons against men becoming hairdressers. It is seen as a women’s occupation. ” Benjamin explained. “ At first, I had to put up with teasing about my career choice. However, opinion is changing, and I am getting more clients who are men. They actually feel more comfortable now coming to a male hairdresser.”
“I hope other Solomon Islanders, especially men, will stop hiding their talents and apply for this course,” concluded Benjamin. “Men need to put aside their embarrassment and go for the internationally recognised qualifications available through APTC.”
