Vanuatu part-time chefs’ course near completion
Seven STH students attending the part-time Commercial Cookery Certificate III course at the Vanuatu campus are close to completing their studies.
The only woman attending the course is Maylin Dan who works at the Chantilly on the Bay Hotel. Maylin says that she was “passionately determined to complete the course”. Maylin also says that not only were her male classmates supportive, but that she received full support from her employer, hotel owner Jason Dean, as well as manager, Rob Smille.
This was the first part-time course for chefs, and students began their studies in 2007. They have all but completed the course, except their final restaurant assessment.
Some of the students’ course work takes place at the on-campus Nambunga restaurant, which is open to the public two days a week.
All of the students are employed locally at the vast array of resorts, cafes and boutique hotel dining rooms in Port Vila.
