APTC provides training to Vanuatu citizens

Nov 17, 2016

Over 50 students from the Australia-Pacific Technical College (APTC) graduated at a ceremony held at the APTC Vanuatu Campus in Port Vila on 16 November with qualifications in 10 different programs.

Since its establishment, about 1500 Vanuatu citizens, of whom more than half are women, have graduated from the APTC. This graduation was no different as a majority of the graduates were of women.

APTC is an innovative development project funded by the Australian Government, delivering Australian-standard skills and qualifications for a wide range of vocational careers for skilled workers across the Pacific.

The keynote address was delivered by Ms Serah Tari, who is the National Consultant for the International Trade Centre (ITC) Project on Economic Empowerment of Pacific Women.

Australia’s High Commissioner to Vanuatu, Jeremy Bruer extended the best wishes of the Australian Government to the graduating students.

“While Australia’s support to help Vanuatu reach its own sustainable development goals covers a wide range of sectors and involves a range of partners, including the private sector. But what please me most is that Australia is investing in you –the people of Vanuatu– men, women and people with a disability”, Mr Bruer said.

“You are shaping Vanuatu’s future," he continued.

The graduates, who are from across the six provinces in Vanuatu, undertook their studies at APTC campuses in Vanuatu, Fiji, Papua New Guinea and Samoa.

The new graduates initiated interesting activities while studying at APTC. Students who graduated with a Certificate III in Tourism, which is offered only in Vanuatu, successfully developed the Paunagisu Village Life Experience Tour while the Certificate IV in Youth Work graduates organised a morning tea for organisations that work with youth and other industry and government stakeholders.

This year, APTC alumni in Vanuatu who have graduated with a qualification in Hospitality, Tourism or Commercial Cookery participated in the Cruise Ship - Work Ready Program. The short course was offered by APTC in collaboration with Carnival Cruise Australia, South Seas Shipping and the Vanuatu Maritime College and focused on providing and enhancing skills for working on cruise ships.

APTC continues to partner with TVET institutions and stakeholders to provide quality training to the people of Vanuatu.

APTC’s current partnership with the Vanuatu Institute of Technology (VIT) is enabling the two institutes to share a carpentry training facility and to deliver the Certificate III in Carpentry qualification.

APTC has also engaged with the Australian TVET provider, William Angliss TAFE Institute, to provide tourism students from both institutes with the opportunity to network with and learn from each other.

APTC is an Australian Government initiative in partnership with the Pacific and Timor-Leste.

APTC is implemented by TAFE Queensland (RTO 0275)
