Twenty Nauruans completed the first ready-for-work program delivered by the Australia Pacific Training Coalition (APTC) on 11-22 October 2021.  The two-week program covered essential skills, including work, health and safety, employability skills, financial management, digital literacy, work ethics and health and well-being.

Brett Thomson, the Pacific Labour Facility Skills Development Manager, said, “The program was developed and delivered as a partnership between the Nauru Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Pacific Labour Facility, the APTC and Simfresh, an Australian approved employer, demonstrating the power of agencies working together for a common outcome.”

The participants are now eligible to enter the Government of Nauru’s work ready pool, and to be selected by Australian approved employers for up to three years’ work on the Seasonal Worker Programme or the Pacific Labour Scheme.

Simfresh has committed to offering 10 Nauruan workers a position at their New South Wales farm by February 2022, while other approved employers are showing great interest in the remaining workers.

Rebecca Amwano, Director for the Labour Mobility Unit in Nauru’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, congratulated the students and said, "Your journey starts today, you are Nauru's ambassadors, and the country trusts that you will pave the way for future Nauruans."

One of the participants, Mesach Harris said, “I would like to thank the governments of Nauru and Australia for preparing me for future employment opportunities.”

The training was delivered by trainers based in Fiji and supported by a consultant, Yoshi Harris, in Nauru.

Mr Harris was pleased with the commitment of the participants throughout the training. He encouraged the participants to stay true to their values and continue to work towards their goals.

APTC’s Vocational Training Manager for Vanuatu and Nauru, Nicholas Venables, reiterated APTC's commitment to improve employability skills of Pacific Islands citizens, including Nauruans.

"APTC is proud to be supporting the ready-for-work program for Nauru. The skills acquired in this training will help the participants to go a long way in their careers and support employment, businesses and economic growth in Nauru," Mr Venables added.

APTC is Australia's flagship TVET investment for the region, delivering technical and employability skills across the Pacific and Timor-Leste.

APTC is an Australian Government initiative in partnership with the Pacific and Timor-Leste.
