Certificate III in Tourism

Ms Tauraoi Kirite (also known as Margaret) graduated from APTC with a Certificate III in Tourism in 2011, and now works as the School Manager for Blue Will Language Institute (Fiji) Ltd in Lautoka.

The school is for Japanese students who would like to learn English as a second language. At the same time, the students are benefitting from the Fiji experience, learning more about Fiji and interacting with the locals.

Ms Kirite says her APTC training has helped her develop better organisational skills and taught her to be flexible. She adds that such skills are very important in her current role.

Originally from the Rabi Island in Fiji, she says her interest in tourism stemmed from her passion to help people.

“The difficulty my community faced when tourists visited our island motivated me to pursue this unique career. I noticed that no one would speak to a visitor because of their inability to speak in English. I wanted to make a difference so I decided I will learn and teach others in my community,” she explains.

Ms Kirite is very involved in the community. She coordinates the Free English Education for Kiribati Islands program to provide language support for students from islands affected by climate change. She has been instrumental in setting up the Unity Youth Group and the Pasifika Entertainment to help support and engage unemployed youths.

Ms Kirite has extensive experience working with students as she spent 14 years as a teacher at Banaban Primary School on Rabi Island before moving to Kiribati in 2004. While in Kiribati, she worked in various roles, including Rental Car Manager for Tarawa Motors, Kiribati Holidays Coordinator with Tobaraoi Travels (an agent for Fiji Airways in Kiribati) and Assistant Marketing Manager for Otintaai Hotel.

APTC is an Australian Government initiative in partnership with the Pacific and Timor-Leste.

APTC is implemented by TAFE Queensland (RTO 0275)
