Nauruans advance International Skills Training with APTC

Sep 25, 2019

The Australia Pacific Training Coalition (APTC) delivered an intensive International Skills Training (IST) in Nauru last month. IST is an internationally accredited program aimed at training and assessing adult learners in technical and vocational education and training (TVET) in their respective industry areas.

At the request of the Nauru TVET Centre, APTC delivered the training to 11 Nauruans from sectors including the Department of Commerce Industry and Environment, Nauru Rehabilitation Corporation, the Nauru TVET Centre and The University of the South Pacific.

APTC’s Senior Trainer, Kevin Tabi, was impressed by the calibre of the Nauruan cohort and their willingness to learn.

“This is the first time an International Skills Training was held in Nauru. It will assist the participants, some of whom are trainers, to better select their students. It will also enable them to enhance their methods of planning, delivering and assessing course materials,” Mr Tabi said.

One of the training participants, the Director for the Nauru TVET Centre, Floria Detabene, noted that the training will benefit her in her role of managing and directing trade and vocational training within the institution.

“IST has given me the opportunity to learn more about how to best improve the quality assurance of our training and assessment as a training provider,” Ms Detabene said.

“The training provides the essential skills trainers and heads of training institutions should acquire to be competent in their roles,” she added.

APTC Country Director for Vanuatu and Nauru, Anna Naupa, stressed the importance of such training programs delivered in Nauru, saying they complement APTC’s commitment to improving TVET pathways, employment outcomes and workplace productivity.

“As APTC continues to build our visibility and programs in Nauru, we are delighted to partner with the Nauru TVET Centre to build training capability on-island,” Ms Naupa said.

She also acknowledged the invaluable support of Ms Detabene as Nauru TVET Centre Director.

APTC continues to work closely with the Government of Nauru and its people to promote a more skilled, inclusive and productive workforce that enhances Pacific prosperity.

APTC is an Australian Government initiative in partnership with the Pacific and Timor-Leste.
